"The Kite Runner" review

One of the books I read this summer while flying back and forth from Allentown to Seattle was the book "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini. It was the author's first published work, and I was intrigued by the subject matter.

The title itself drew me in because no notion of what a kite runner is would even come to mind. The closest thing I could relate to it was "drug runner" but I knew that could not be it.

There are other reviews of the book out there, but I just wanted to add my name to the number of people who recommend it for adults. Some rather disturbing events take place that are unsuitable even for teenagers in my opinion. At least Hosseini left out graphic details of some of the more disturbing acts. The story would not have been complete without them, however. So, I do not object to the writer's inclusion of a male rape and a brutal beating.

This story made Afghanistan come alive to me. It opened my eyes to people who before reading this book were merely victims of two very cruel regimes; first the Soviet Union, and then the Taliban.
